New Families
Welcome to the South Run Seahawks website! We are a summer swim team, located in the South Run neighborhood in Fairfax Station, VA. We offer practices at the neighborhood pool, swim meets on Saturdays and Mondays, and a variety of social events for participating swimmers. We are also members of the Northern Virginia Swimming League and Springfield-Burke Developmental League.
How much does it cost to join the South Run Seahawks?
In 2025, our regular registration fee is $250 for the first swimmer, $230 for the second swimmer, $210 for the third swimmer, and $190 for each additional swimmer. Registration opens on April 1 each year. As part of the registration this year, each swimmer who registers by April 28 will receive a Seahawk t-shirt.
Can my child join the South Run Seahawks?
The South Run Seahawks swim team is open to swimmers who live in the South Run neighborhood who are between the ages of 4 through 18 (based on their age as of June 1).
Can we join the Seahawks if we live outside of the South Run neighborhood?
Unfortunately, no. Only residents of South Run can join our swim team.
What kind of swimming experience does my child need to have to join the team?
None! We have children of all swimming abilities on our team. However, your child should be able to separate easily and participate without parent interaction. We’d like your child to join the team, learn a few swimming strokes or build upon what they already know, and have some fun.
When is swim practice?
The Practice Schedule page has the most detailed information on times and dates for the season.
In general, the season starts the day after Memorial Day with daily after-school swim practice (except for Juniors/Juniors Advanced).
Once school is over, the Seahawks switch to morning practice. Morning practice is Monday through Friday, and it's broken out by age groups:
- Juniors/Juniors Advanced
- 8 years & under
- 9-12 years
- 13 years & up
What is the Junior Seahawks program?
This is a swim program for our youngest swimmers, typically between the ages of 4 and 7. The minimum age requirement is 4 as of June 1 in order to be eligible to join the team. No swim experience is required. However, your child should be able to separate easily and participate without parent interaction.
The Junior Seahawks program strives to get children comfortable in the water and ready to swim. They can participate in "Lollipop Races" during Monday home meets (swimming or attempting to swim across the shallow end of the pool with the assistance of coaches). Once children develop certain swimming skills, they become eligible to participate in Monday night developmental swim meets; our Head Coach can help you determine when your child is ready.
Practices for Junior Seahawks begin the Monday following the last day of school.
We also offer an Advanced Junior Seahawks program for younger swimmers who are more comfortable in the water.
What should I bring to practice?
Please bring/wear your swimsuit, sunscreen, towel, water bottle, goggles, and a good attitude! A swim cap will help keep your swimmer warm in cooler water. Though it's not required, boys should wear jammers or briefs to practice. Wearing loose fitting shorts makes it much more difficult to swim.
Do I need to purchase the team swimsuit?
If your Seahawk is competing in the Saturday or Monday swim meets, they should wear the team suit. It is typically updated every two years, and information about the style and cost are communicated through the South Run Seahawks Facebook group. Your swimmer can be fitted at Suit Up (University Mall, 10627 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA). We have a new team suit for the 2024 season!
If your Seahawk is not competing in the swim meets, the team suit is not required. However, the team suit or a solid black suit should be worn for the official team photo.
Is there a winter swim program?
Yes, the South Run Seahawks have a winter swim season. It’s a great option to keep your kids in the water, and it’s a fairly easy commitment at only one evening per week. The season generally runs from mid-September to mid-May at a local rec center. The 2023-2024 season was held on Sundays from 6-7 p.m. at South Run Rec Center. Additional details are communicated through the South Run Seahawks Facebook group.
There are also a number of excellent club swimming options in the area, including Nations Capital Swim Club, The Capitol Sea Devils, and Machine Aquatics. Visit PVS Clubs to learn more about these programs.
I’d like to volunteer! How do I get involved?
So, maybe this isn’t an FAQ! But, we’d like it to be. Did you know it takes at least 45 volunteers to make every home meet happen?
All families with a swimmer participating in any meet should plan on having at least one parent volunteer to assist the team in some capacity for that meet. You can learn more about jobs related to the meets on the Volunteering page. You can sign up to volunteer through the Events page (you must be logged in to see all events) or using the SwimTopia app.
All families should also plan to volunteer for at least one social event per week. Again, you can sign up to volunteer through the Events page (you must be logged in to see all events) or using the SwimTopia app.
You can also email [email protected] for more information. Helping out is a great way to get to know your neighbors.
